The town of Fluminimaggiore is situated in the valley of the rio Mannu. The river flows into the village and sets in motion the blades of the Zurru Licheri mill, dating from 1750, now an ethnographic museum. The present settlement was born in 1704 when Viscount Asquer granted permission to rebuild the village of Flumini Major, uninhabited for a century. The agricultural hamlet, beginning in the late 19th century, became a center of support for mining, in fact today there are some 30 abandoned mining sites in the terriotrio. The ghost village of the Malacalzetta mine stands out, while the mine de su Zurfuru is worth a visit. The coastline is dotted with several creeks: Guardia is Turcus, sa Perdixedda Manna and sa Perdixedda Pittica (‘the big and small stone’) and the tourist hamlet of Portixeddu, ten kilometers from the town. Five kilometers from the village are the caves of su Mannau, a karst complex ‘sculpted’ 540 million years ago. Four kilometers from the caves is the temple of Antas, one of the greatest monuments of Sardinian Antiquity. The temple features a staircase of three shelves (originally more) and a podium adorned with elegant columns delimiting the votive areas. Originating as a Nuragic sanctuary (9th century BC), it experienced Carthaginian and Punic-Hellenistic phases. During Roman times the temple experienced its greatest splendor. A nearby tomb returned the bronze statuette of a deity: perhaps the Sardus Pater or the Punic god Sid, a transposition of the local deity Babai. The buildings in the historic center are built of stone and unfired earth. Today the municipal administration is engaged in the “Happy village” project with which it wants to recover and reuse the abandoned building stock for a hospitality project aimed at the elderly from all over Europe. The part related to the architectural recovery of the buildings will also see the collaboration of the Faculty of Architecture of Cagliari.
