The project idea is the brainchild of the City of Fluminimaggiore to try to uplift the economic and social conditions of Fluminimaggiore, which is still too tied to the economic-mining crisis, but has great residential tourism potential.
The idea is based on the realization of a widespread elderly-friendly residence, a new concept of a retirement home that sees use of the hundreds of abandoned and severely dilapidated homes located within the urban center.
The proposed residency is aimed at seniors over 65 from northern Italy and northern Europe looking for places with a predominantly mild climate with a good quality of life and a gain in cost of living.
The residency offer is represented by an all-inclusive package, which includes in addition to residency specialized and personalized services such as health care, mobility and transportation, home and personal care, cooking with local products, and recreational and educational activities.
The management of the project will be entrusted to a Community Cooperative, which will be in charge of the entire project from the rehabilitation of the buildings to the contract to the rental of the housing including services.
The Community Cooperative will see the involvement of the inhabitants of Fluminimaggiore themselves, and will also have the task of carrying out interventions in the field of tourism, for the enhancement of cultural and natural heritage, sustainable energy production, transportation and mobility services, and the enhancement of local productions.
At the moment, the first buildings to be recovered are being chosen, and the collaboration of the Faculty of Architecture of Cagliari has been requested for their recovery in order to create a model site to which to adhere for the proper recovery of the buildings, which are partly built of stone and unfired earth. While the City of Raw Earth Association will support the municipal administration in cultural initiatives aimed at the recognition of historical architectural heritage and thus in the importance of their recovery and enhancement also as identity heritage. As well as promoting training sessions aimed at designers and construction companies to promote the use of traditional materials, starting with unfired earth.
