The Villa Ficana Ecomuseum of earthen houses, located in the city of Macerata, was established in May 2016. It represents the culmination of twenty years of work involving schools, institutions, residents, and local associations, which led to the rediscovery of the value of a specific part of the city—its history, traditions, and earthen architecture. Villa Ficana is a village composed entirely of earthen houses, and the Ecomuseum also serves as a museum of traditional raw earth construction.
It houses a documentation center and serves as a hub for promotion and outreach aimed at anyone interested in earthen architecture, focused on the rediscovery and modernization of historical techniques.
With a view toward enhancing community social bonds and a sustainable lifestyle, the Ecomuseum offers: guided tours that allow guests to experience neighborhood life between the 19th and 20th centuries, experiential tourist itineraries, educational activities for schools, and workshops for adults dedicated to the rediscovery or in-depth study of themes related to local traditions. The Villa Ficana Ecomuseum of earthen houses is part of the cultural offerings of the Municipality of Macerata.
