Ussaramanna is located in the valley between the Giara (sa Jara Manna) and the Giara minor of Siddi, in a splendid naturalistic setting. Its territory is covered with expanses of wheat, almond groves, vineyards and olive groves, from which excellent olive oil and malvasia and nuragus wines are derived. Near the giara of Siddi lushly greens an oasis of Mediterranean essences, including aloe, laurel, chamomile, milk thistle, myrtle, rosemary, sage and thyme. Herbs have boosted the cosmetic and pharmaceutical sectors-from them valuable essential oils are made-and they feature prominently in cooking recipes. In April, the exhibition of wild herbs is celebrated, with conferences and tastings, which are combined with an artisanal exhibition and sagra de sa pardula, a dessert made with ricotta or cheese.
The town stretches from the nuraghe San Pietro, atop a hill on the outskirts, to the parish church of San Quirico martire, built on an earlier building. Reconstruction began in the 18th century and was completed with the consecration in 1953. The historic center preserves houses with central courtyards, arcades, storehouses and valuable portals, built is stone and unfired earth. Southeast of the town is the shrine of Santa Maria, dating from the late 16th century, which was deconsecrated in 1753 and used as a granary mount. The Santu Perdu, also called su Nuraxi, is a four-lobed nuraghe with a well-preserved central tower surrounded by a bastion with the four towers. The area preserves other interesting nuraghi: Cabonu, Molas and su Sensu. The origins of the village are possibly from Roman times, to which a necropolis in the locality Bingias beccias, ceramics and stone blocks from a small rural settlement near the church of San Lorenzo martire also date. The 14th-century sanctuary stands among millennia-old olive trees and Mediterranean scrub: it was parish church of the vanished village of Ussaredda (Ussara minor), whose survivors, according to legend, founded Ussaramanna. From the church come two paintings depicting St. Rocco and St. Sebastian, works by the master of Oliena, which are kept in the national picture gallery in Cagliari.
