Roccamontepiano is a municipality in the province of Chieti in Abruzzo. It encompasses partly mountainous and partly hilly territory in the northeastern foothills of the Maiella massif. It is located along the road that goes up to the Passolanciano-Maielletta area. Its origins are very ancient, and it presents itself to the visitor’s eyes with a graceful and quaint old town. Among the main attractions we have: the Monastery of San Pietro a Maiella. Dating back to the 12th century, few ruins remain. The complex has been recovered as an archaeological site, as the plan with monastic complex, visible by the perimeter walls, and the actual church, visible in the outer body, with the facade intact, remains perfectly legible. The Sanctuary of St. Roch, on the other hand, is the center’s main church, rebuilt in the 1950s on top of the cave near which, until the landslide of 1765, stood the ancient little church. Finally, religious architecture also includesthe Church of Santa Maria de Lapide. The present sanctuary is a 1950s reconstruction of the old church of Santa Maria della Pietra, destroyed by a landslide in 1765. The shrine is located on top of the hill in the Terranova district, and has a modern appearance, with a rectangular floor plan with a turreted bell tower. The roof is made of plain brick. The three-aisle interior has a stone altar with a bronze bas-relief facade, and a semicircular apse

In Roccamontepiano there are a number of earthen buildings constructed using the masonry technique, since the 1990s the municipal administrations have aimed to safeguard this heritage. The hilly terrain is planted with olive groves and vineyards, and the local cuisine offers: sheep arrosticini, sweet fiadoni, and codfish with peppers and cooked wine.
