Donori is a town in the historical region of Parteolla, bordering the southern Campidano. Once a mining center, as attested by the remains of activities in the former Monteponi mine, today, thanks to the fertility of the surrounding hilly terrain, its agricultural and pastoral vocation is strong: cereals, olive groves and vineyards, including those of cannonau and bovale, are cultivated, and its dairy production is renowned. The agro-pastoral tradition is evidenced in the town by the former grain mount, now used for exhibitions and displays. Not surprisingly, the area was inhabited since the Bronze Age, as evidenced in particular by the nuraghi sa Domu e s’Orcu mannu and Guntuxius. Then there are traces of Roman rule: remains of necropolis and a villa. In the Middle Ages, under the judicature of Cagliari, the village of Donori was founded. Abandoned during the 15th century, it was repopulated beginning in 1619. The historic center is characterized by the presence of several buildings built with the unbaked brick technique; for several years the municipal administration has been engaged in their preservation and enhancement.
The historic center is characterized by the parish church of St. George the Bishop, built in Gothic-Catalan forms at the end of the 15th century. It features three naves, frescoed chapels and Byzantine sculptures set in the bell tower. Near the town is the country church of santa Maria de sa Defenza, surrounded by olive groves and dating from 1732: according to legend, it was built by a Barbary bandit hiding on Mount Zurru. Donori has several areas of naturalistic interest: that of the former mine located at the foot of Mount Andria, in the locality of s’Ortu becciu (the old vegetable garden), and that of sa Rocca de is Piccionisi (the rock of the pigeons), between two small elevations, an area rich in gorges and unspoiled nature.
