Architecture Archives: Vico Mossa
Vico Mossa was born in Serramanna on October 16, 1914. He graduated from the University of Rome with a degree in Architecture in 1939. Returning to Sardinia, various circumstances led him to settle in Sassari in 1940, where he resided for the rest of his life, never ceasing to maintain excellent and frequent relations with his hometown. He passed away in Sassari at the age of 89, leaving behind a cultural and documentary legacy, now available to the “Vico Mossa Architecture Study Center established in Serramanna.
In 2010, the heirs of Arch. Mossa give the archival documents to the Municipality of Serramanna, the archive consists of projects, articles and a photographic fund with black-and-white images dating back to the early 1950s and mainly concerning popular architecture in Sardinia.
In 2010 among the heirs of the architect. Mossa the Municipality of Serramanna, the Faculty of Architecture of Cagliari, the City of Raw Earth Association and the History of the City Association a memorandum of understanding was signed by which it was decided to give life to the Vico Mossa Architecture Study Center.
In 2011 the photographic exhibition with its catalog “Vico Mossa Photographs of Architecture” was set up.
Subsequently, the Municipality of Serramanna proceeds with the reprinting of the autobiographical novel “I cabilli” and then gives life to the literary festival “Strangius” dedicated to autobiographical literature.
In 2019 the Municipality of Serramanna organizes in Milan, in collaboration with the Polytechnic School of Architecture, the Exhibition/Conference “I laugh because I am afraid” – Vico Mossa and Sardinia in the international debate on spontaneous architecture, between rurality and modernity. Subsequently, the book was presented at the International Book Fair in Turin.
The monographic exhibition dedicated to the work of the Sardinian architect Vico Mossa is very important for Italian architectural culture, which thus rediscovers one of its leading protagonists, hitherto known mainly for his commitment with respect to studies related to so-called minor architecture.
